Target Species
Our deep-sea fishing trips in Charleston target a variety of pelagic species, including Mahi-Mahi, Wahoo, Tuna (Blackfin and occasionally Bluefin), Kingfish, Sailfish, and Marlin. We employ techniques such as trolling with Penn International 30 and 50 wide reels spooled with 30-50lb test line and rigged with 80-100lb wind-on leaders. We utilize a mix of deep-running baits like ballyhoo and Nomad jigs with planers and surface lures like cedar plugs and skirted ballyhoo, depending on the season and target species.
Mahi Mahi
We’re catching Mahi way off the coast in the Gulf Stream during the summer months, from late spring to early fall, around weedlines, floating debris, and big schools of baitfish.
Wahoo
Wahoo are fast-swimming, hard-fighting predators found in deeper offshore waters, often around weed lines, current edges, and areas where baitfish are abundant.
Blackfin Tuna
These highly migratory fish follow baitfish schools and can be found in deeper waters offshore. The peak season for tuna fishing typically occurs during the warmer months.
Kingfish
Kingfish are found off the Charleston coast from May through September as they follow baitfish and the perfect water temperature. They fight hard and are great to eat.
Sailfish
Sailfish can be caught near weedlines, current changes, and other structure off the coast of Charleston in the warmer months with peak seasons running from July through August.
Blue Marlin
Charleston marlin fishing is best during the summer months as they migrate along the Atlantic Coast. We're trolling with heavy tackle for a fight with a fish you'll never forget.
Where We Go
We’re going into every deep-sea trip with a game plan! We’re heading 50-75 miles offshore with about a 1-1.5 hour run time.
Our offshore trips utilize a combination of technology and traditional techniques. We analyze satellite imagery to identify temperature breaks and current lines, which are prime fishing spots. We also consider the Gulf Stream’s strong northward current, adjusting our course accordingly. Once beyond the ledge, we become active hunters, searching for signs of fish, including birds, floating debris, and baitfish activity. We deploy a spread of lines and troll at 7-9 miles per hour, constantly adjusting our course based on the changing conditions.
