Mahi Madness: A Day of Slaying with Katherine Salom

There’s a certain magic in seeing someone hook into their very first Mahi-Mahi, and it will never get old to us.

It’s always a pleasure when friends of the family come down to visit us here in Charleston, but it’s even better when we can put them on a bite they’ll never forget. Recently, we had the talented Katherine Salom out with us at 4 Sons Charters for a run offshore, and let me tell you—the Mahi did not disappoint.

A First-Timer’s Luck (and a Whole Lot of Skill)

There’s a certain magic in seeing someone hook into their very first Mahi-Mahi. That electric blue and bright gold hitting the surface is a sight that never gets old, no matter how many years I’ve been behind the wheel. Katherine was a natural from the jump. Even when a big bull tried to “do her in,” she stayed with it, kept that line tight, and landed a beautiful fish.

But as any seasoned angler knows, once you find the weed lines, the party is just getting started.

Doubled Up and Tripled Up

We spent the day trolling some beautiful patches of weed lines, and the action stayed steady. It wasn’t long before we had the outriggers popping and lines screaming. At one point, we had Katherine, Whitney, and the rest of the crew tripled up.

“I love when they see the boat!” Katherine laughed as she brought another jumper alongside.

It was a beautiful sight—fish jumping out wide, lines being cleared, and plenty of “Bionic” rigged ballyhoo being sent back out to keep the momentum going. We even had a few big followers come right to the transom, leading to some of the best Mahi “slaying” I’ve seen all season.

The “Slay” Day Results

By the time we turned the bow back toward Charleston, our fish box was looking mighty fine. Between the high-flying jumpers and the heavy-pulling bulls, the crew worked hard and the rewards were plenty. It was an honor to help Katherine tick “Mahi” off her bucket list, and we had a blast doing it.

As Katherine put it at the end of the day, “What a day to remember!”
