Bonnetheads

Don’t let their size fool you—bonnetheads are incredible on light tackle! These smaller members of the hammerhead family arrive in droves during the warm summer months, moving into our shallow estuaries, mud flats, and tidal creeks. Ranging anywhere from 2 to 4 feet, bonnetheads are uniquely specialized to feed on crustaceans, making live blue crabs, fiddlers, and fresh shrimp our secret weapons to get them biting. Because they frequent shallower waters, we often target them on the flat edges near the harbor, giving beginners and kids an incredible fight without needing heavy, tiring gear.

Hammerheads

When folks think of iconic sharks, hammerheads are usually at the top of the list. We start seeing hammerheads push into the Charleston Harbor by late spring and throughout the summer months—putting up a notoriously athletic fight packed with sudden directional shifts. We target them along deep drop-offs and open structure using live bait and cut bait.

Fine-Toothed Sharks

Fine-toothed sharks are sleek and fast, moving into South Carolina during the summer. Averaging between 3 and 5 feet, what they lack in size they more than make up for in speed and acrobatics. Fine-tooths are aggressive pack hunters, we consistently find them stacked up in the main harbor basins and near current rips.

Sandbar Sharks

If you want a true fight, the sandbar shark (often called the brown shark), is built for power. Characterized by their tall, distinct dorsal fins and muscular bodies, sandbars love deep, high-current environments. We set up for them along deep channel ledges, soaking whole live or fresh-cut fish on heavy tackle near the bottom.

Bull Sharks

The undisputed heavyweights of shark fishing in Charleston, bull sharks are famous for their stocky build, sheer aggression, and incredible power. Resident and migratory bull sharks can be found in the Charleston Harbor all summer long. We target them in ambush zones where water moves fast—especially around the deeper shipping channels, jetties, and around the Ravenel Bridge.

We use custom-rigged wire leaders, heavy-duty circle hooks (which ensure a safe, clean release for the fish), and a mix of live and cut bait.
